JOSEPH EPSTEIN is the editor of The American Scholar. His essays and stories have appeared in Commentary, The New Criterion, Harper's, The Hudson Review, and The New Yorker. His most recent book, a collection of familiar essays, is Once More Around the Block, published by W. W. Norton. His new collection of literary essays, to be entitled A Better Class of Goods, will appear sometime next year.
